While the “Where in the World Are We?”: Mapping Our Place exhibit is up, the Community Play Project is offering free happenings in the Gallery:

Saturdays Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7 and 14;  1- 4 PM:

Drop-in Art-making in the Gallery, with the upcoming Community Play in mind: puppets, posters, animal masks

Wednesday September 14; 7 PM: Kitchen Stories and Drawing – bring a cooking tool from your family or place of origin and tell a story about it!  And, guiding drawing of the objects

Saturday September 17th: We’ll have a mini-exhibit of Kitchen implements from different places with a show-and-tell demonstration of how they are used.

Saturday September 24th  7PM:  A Presentation about Canadian Community Plays and what you may imagine the Salmon Arm/Sxwetsméllp Community Play to be! Delectable snacks….

Friday September 30;  5 PM and 6 PM: Runaway Moon Theatre’s

“Vasilisa and the Light” Magical Shadow Play for adults, youth and children (come after Downtown Trick-or-Treating!)

Saturday November 14: Lunch and collaborative map-making. We’ll be creating a large map of Salmon Arm. Share what spots are important to you; if you’d like you can bring an object that represents something that is meaningful to you about this place.

“Where in the World Are We?” Community Play Project is a collaboration between Runaway Moon Theatre, Shuswap Immigrant Services Society, Salmon Arm Art Gallery, the Social Planning Council of the North Okanagan, and you!

What is the Community Play? It’s a large-scale theatre project, that is by, for, and about residents of Salmon Arm / Sxwetsméllp.

Where does the idea come from?   It’s inspired by Ann Jellicoe, an English playwright who made a play that a whole village became involved in.  A few Community Plays have happened in Canada – including one in Enderby in 1999!

How big is it? The project is so large that it needs everyone to take part to make it a success!

How can I take part? by performing, making costumes, creating puppets, playing music, helping organize … contributing ideas and stories that explore the theme, “Where in the World Are We?”.

What if I have no experience?

Everyone is welcome. No experience is needed. You may learn some new skills, and discover you have skills and talents you weren’t aware of!

Who is leading the project?

A core group of professional theatre artists experienced in making these events happen.

When is it?   In May 2027 we’ll present the play!  In March and April 2027, we’ll practise and make the costumes and puppets.

How can I get involved?

* Look for posters and notices of workshops and events taking place between now and March!

* Share your email or phone number with info@runawaymoon.org, or (250) 253-4366, and we’ll keep you up to date.

* Send a story:  a memory of coming to Salmon Arm, something you’ve heard that is interesting, a feeling or impression you have, an interesting thing that happened….

* Invite us to meet with your work group or friend group and give

an overview of the project.
